The old-fashioned cocktail is one of the most classic in the books and my husband Robbie makes the absolute best! His “secret,” or more like recipe for success, is to make the homemade simple syrup and serve with a large ice cube.

Ingredients
- 1 cup brown sugar (for simple syrup)
- 1 cup water (for simple syrup)
- 1 oz simple syrup (see above ingredients)
- 2-3 oz bourbon (we use Bulleit)
- Angostura bitters
- Orange peel
Directions
- Step 1
- Make the simple syrup first. If you’ve pre-made, skip to step 3. Bring 1 cup water to boil. Stir in 1 cup brown sugar until dissolved.
- Step 2
- Let cool in fridge before use. Store in air-tight container.
- Step 3
- Pour simple syrup into mixing glass and add bitters to taste. Add in cubes of small ice and stir.
- Step 4
- Add bourbon to glass and stir again.
- Step 5
- Strain into lowball glass with 1 large ice cube.
- Step 6
- Twist orange peel over glass and add for garnish. Enjoy!
